The Genesis

Folang was born out of a simple, profound realization. In a world full of real-time voice translators, smart assistants, and automated text transcribers, the sign language community was left entirely out of the picture. The tools to help parents teach children, or to let friends communicate in sign language, were bulky, expensive, and insecure.

Mission & Challenges

Currently, our biggest hurdle is platform weight. The dataset and deep learning models required for high-accuracy on-device landmark tracking are heavy, demanding substantial system storage and loading times. In an open-source world, we want to optimize this—making the platform lightweight and accessible to anyone, on any device, anywhere.

Future Translation

Our ultimate vision is to transition from a learning utility into a fully real-time sign language translator. A seamless bridge that processes camera input locally, instantly converting signs into speech and text, enabling frictionless conversations between Deaf and hearing individuals.

The Motivation

I believe that people who cannot speak or listen are incredibly special—they represent unique choices of the Creator. This tool is built to bring accessibility directly into their households. It facilitates learning, helps parents communicate with children early, and supports educational settings with automated, private feedback loops.

Dataset Optimization

Running deep learning models locally inside a browser means loading heavy structures. We are heavily focused on reducing dataset footprint and storage overhead while maintaining high fidelity detection. As an open-source project, we welcome contributions on model optimization, quantization, and dataset compression.

Future Workspace

The future of Folang is a completely integrated real-time sign language interpreter. We are working toward expanding from individual fingerspelling to continuous sentence translation, providing instant feedback without sending any data over the internet.
